Connecting Social Emotional Learning to Success...

Picture
The U.S. Department of Education defines employability skills as “general skills that are necessary for success in the labor market at all employment levels and in all sectors.” Employability Skills Framework, which details these skills, includes critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills and qualities such as self-discipline, integrity, and responsibility— matching many core skills taught in SEL.

Self-motivation, time management, communication, problem solving, and relationship building are the types of skills employers often look for.

How Do Social and Emotional Skills Relate to Career, Business, and Economic Success?
SEL curricula teach self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making so students can manage their behaviors, understand and relate to the perspectives of others, and make sound personal and social choices. This suite of Competencies complements academic learning and meets many of the employability needs identified by business leaders.  © 2016 Committee for Children ∙ cfchildren.org
Why is SEL in the Workplace
School-based social and emotional learning (SEL) curricula provide a key to workforce development by explicitly teaching the social and emotional skills employers are seeking and the U.S. economy needs. Research shows SEL works to improve behavioral, academic, and career success.
Employers value SEL
92% Of surveyed executives say skills such as problem-solving and communicating clearly are equally or more important than technical skills.                         - National Bureau of Economic Research, 2015
The Top 10 skills identified by the World Economic Forum all involve social and emotional competence.
1. Complex problem solving
2. Critical thinking
3. Creativity
4. People management
5. Coordinating with others
6. Emotional intelligence
7. Judgment and decision-making
8. Service orientation
9. Negotiation
10. Cognitive flexibility
And research shows that social and emotional skills and attitudes also contribute to other skills such as critical thinking.

What is the purpose of Social and Emotional learning at the Workplace
Social-emotional learning (SEL) helps kids work on things like coping with feelings and setting goals. It also helps with interpersonal skills like working in teams and resolving conflicts. SEL can help kids who learn and think differently talk about their challenges and build self-esteem.
