What is an internship?
An internship is where students are placed on a job site in the community, and will be able to earn high school credit for their work experience. Work-based learning is a unique form of education which integrates classroom study with supervised work experience. While there, they will gain insight related to one or more functions of their career area of choice. Internships give students the direct experience they need to develop employability skills and the exposure required to make an informed decision on their career path. Work objectives are developed between the student and employer, and the successful completion of those can lead to high school credit.
What are the expectations?
Students are expected to have excellent communication skills, demonstrate responsible behavior, be respectful and punctual in whatever placement they secure.
Students are required to:
- Communicate with the Work-Based Learning Coordinator on a regular basis
- Complete and turn in a timesheet signed by the employer every week via google classroom
- Student must be in compliance with school attendance and academic policies
- Student must be able to provide their own transportation to and from the worksite
How can you sign up?
The first step in signing up for an internship is to speak with your guidance counselor or your Career Specialist. They will determine whether or not an internship would be appropriate or if you would rather find more value in a job shadow or informational interview.
It is important to understand that an internship is a commitment. Once you are placed, you must follow through with the duration of the course. If you are unsure of a placement or if you are unsure of what you would be interested in studying, contact your Work-Based Learning specialist and they will guide you in the right direction.
